Paraneoplastic Cerebellar Degeneration: A Rare but Important Consideration
نویسندگان
چکیده
Paraneoplastic cerebellar degeneration is an uncommon autoimmune disorder characterized clinically by progressive, ultimately incapacitating ataxia and pathologically by destruction of cerebellar Purkinje cells, with variable loss of other cell populations. The paraneoplastic cerebellar degeneration can antedate the recognition of malignancy and hence can be a warning sign for occult tumor. We are reporting two cases of paraneoplastic cerebellar degeneration that presented before any evidence of tumor and later developed advanced stage of malignancy not amenable for surgery.

Anti-Yo antibody-mediated paraneoplastic cerebellar degeneration in a female patient with pleural malignant mesothelioma.
Paraneoplastic cerebellar degeneration is a rare non-metastatic complication of malignancies. It presents with acute or subacute onset of ataxia, dysarthria and intention tremor. Paraneoplastic cerebellar degeneration is most commonly associated with malignancies of the ovary, breast and lung. The anti-Yo (anti-Purkinje cells) antibodies that specifically damage the Purkinje cells of the cerebe...
متن کاملParaneoplastic cerebellar degeneration and limbic encephalitis in a patient with adenocarcinoma of the colon.
The rare association of two neurological paraneoplastic syndromes, paraneoplastic cerebellar degeneration and limbic encephalitis occurred in a 55 year old woman with a microscopic adenocarcinoma in a colonic polyp. Complete removal of the tumour by polypectomy brought about a favourable recovery from limbic encephalitis but the cerebellar ataxia remained. High titres of antineuronal nuclear an...
متن کاملParaneoplastic cerebellar degeneration in patients with breast cancer: two case reports and literature review
Paraneoplastic neurological syndrome (PNS) is a rare immune-mediated syndrome occurring in less than 1-3% of patients with breast cancer. Two rare cases of paraneoplastic cerebellar degeneration with breast carcinoma were reported here with a brief review of the pertinent literature. The primary indications of these two female patients were progressive lower limb weakness and gait ataxia. Both ...
متن کاملDiagnostic Approach to a Patient With Paraneoplastic Neurological Syndrome
Herein, we discussed a case of an otherwise healthy man who presented with progressive gait imbalance and ataxia, found to have small cell lung cancer. Based upon our clinical findings and laboratory data, a diagnosis of paraneoplastic cerebellar degeneration was made. Paraneoplastic neurological syndromes (PNS) are relatively rare but diverse and always should be considered in differentials. A...

INTRODUCTION Paraneoplastic cerebellar degeneration is a rare non-metastatic manifestation of malignancy. In this report, to the best of our knowledge we describe for the first time a diagnosis of paraneoplastic cerebellar degeneration several months prior to the diagnosis of clear carcinoma of the uterus. CASE PRESENTATION A 75-year-old Caucasian woman manifested a rapidly progressive cerebe...
